The need to act now !
Our planet is increasingly threatened by lifestyles and choices we make related to food production and our living spaces. They include technologies that rely on fossil fuel to fertilize the soil, kill pests and establish single cropping systems. These have disrupted natural ecosystems and created more pollution especially to our water ,air and the soil. Many cultures use food to express their identity with the landscape. For instance, among the Abaluhya sub tribes of Western Kenya special ceremonies and rites such as naming of a new born and traditional weddings had elements of weather such as rain, sunshine and seasonal occurrences marking a special attachment to individuals and the community. Thus the disappearance of certain traditional foods affects the identity and heritage of a people. It is shameful that some of these threats are occasioned by global corporate businesses and investments.
Bio Gardening Innovations [BIOGI] is a non profit making organization operating from Vihiga county in Western Kenya. The organization works with small holder farmers and like minded Non Government Organizations and other associations and networks addressing that focus on raising food using agro-ecological principles and sustainable management of natural resources within reach of local people.
The organization partners with local farmers in setting ecosites as community learning spaces and as places to converge new ideas relating to regenerative enterprises in support of livelihoods in a sustainable manner.
The organization values preservation of local resources and the right of people to access and use these resources to advance their development goals in a sustainable manner.People are at the center of focus before things.
Farmers are the true custodians of resources such as open pollinated seeds and knowledge associated with their ecosystems. They have done this over thousands of farming years and passing over valuable experiences and resources such as seeds which must be well supported by allowing policies that enable innovations and research in traditional knowledge systems. This should then blend with new technological findings.
Our approach and strategy
BIOGI uses a sustainable livelihoods framework to promote its development work.Much focus is on using permaculture ethics of people care, earth care and fair share as holistic tools to mobilize and deliver results. The organization participatory methods and works with farmers through local groups that go through phases of training and thereafter manage their own group enterprises.
The organization encourages starting and managing organic gardens, diverse cropping including food forests, traditionally prepared meals, planning and designing whole farms, integration of small livestock for nutrient recycling, renewable energy, conservation of community based wetlands and regenerative enterprises that are linked with these principles for boosting local economies.
Visitors are welcome to share, learn and support these initiatives.BIOGI identifies with, progressive and well meaning environmentally conscious partners.
